Blogging is a 2 way communication mechanism that has great
advantages for libraries in today’s world. It is another form of social
networking that allows libraries the reach out to its patrons and vice versa. Its
advantages I think, certainly out way the disadvantages. For example, it’s
certainly a way to improve awareness & promote the services/events being
offered to our communities. As well, it’s a way to share information whether it
is about a period of time that the library will be closed due to renovations, or
an announcement about a staff member retiring. The advantages can also be great
for internal communication by allowing librarians from different regions the
ability to gain information & ideas that can be applied to their own
location. It may be an idea for a great story hour program or information on how
to keep your library a vital member of your community. I think libraries that do blog are seen by its
patrons and especially it younger to middle age patrons as up-to-date/current and not behind the times. If blogging is what
patrons want, libraries should progress to meet their technology needs.
As for the disadvantages right now all I can see is that it
has to contain interesting & worthy information to meet a need(s) or if not
the patron(s) may not follow, therefore making time and effort wasted.
